In September 2022, the Bourbon County Health Department, conducted a survey to gauge residents' perspectives on the health status and outcomes of Bourbon County. This initiative aimed to identify the most pressing health concerns within the community to better inform future health strategies and interventions. A total of 631 residents participated in the survey.
The survey results revealed that Mental Health was one of the leading concerns among residents. Specifically, 43.1% of those surveyed indicated that mental health issues were a major health concern in Bourbon County. This large percentage highlights the community's recognition of the importance of mental well-being and the need for enhanced mental health services and resources. The focus on this issue mirror wider societal shifts where mental health awareness has gained more importance, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has exacerbated mental health issues for many.
To address this health concern in Bourbon County, the Health Department has partnered with the Paris-Bourbon County Health and Human Services Committee to established a mental health workgroup. This team will focus on enhancing treatment accessibility, raising public awareness about mental health concerns, and provide community initiatives to address mental health outcomes in Bourbon County.

To address poor mental health outcomes in Bourbon County, the Bourbon County Health Department has launched a free online mental health platform that brings together expert-rated and vetted video, podcasts, apps, books, and more all in one easy-to-use place. Confidential and available 24/7, residents can explore over 100 wellbeing topics and find resources backed by science to self-manage and improve their health.
Sources of Strength is a youth mental health and suicide prevention program that focuses on hope, help, and strength. The program has been shown to increase wellbeing, help-seeking behavior, healthy coping, and connectedness to adults. Designed for K-12 schools, the elementary version of this program uses a classroom curriculum to teach the same strength-based model at an age-appropriate level. Sources of Strength
To help inform and empower resident to seek help for mental health illness or crisis intervention, we are promoting the national crisis lifeline 988. To better increase public awareness of this service, we’ve purchased advertisement space for the Billboard on Main Street during the holiday season and mental health awareness month. We’ve also updated local signage at high traffic hotspots in the community to promote 988.
